Patrick Van Caeckenbergh attempts to reorder and re-map the world in a highly personal, but at the same time universal way. He distances himself from the known outside world and he pseudo-scientifically scrutinises his own life. His illusive collages and peculiar sculptures of figures and phenomena originate from a process of restructuring the everyday things. With little means, the artist incalculably creates assemblages that remind us of features of fables and fairytales. The binding factor in his oeuvre is the aspects of thinking and tinkering. Van Caeckenbergh wants to escape from the one-sided, limited, mechanical and technical methods of cultural behaviour and involves notions of coincidence and obscurity, typical for the way nature operates. His work is philosophical and critical of the social structure. Van Caeckenbergh is a dreamer, philosopher and brilliant thinker. Patrick Van Caeckenbergh has had important solo-exhibitions at Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nîmes and La Maison Rouge, Paris, amongst others. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions as the Venice Biennal in 1993, ‘Hors - Limites. L'art et la vie 1952-1994’ at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, ‘Manifesta 1’ in Rotterdam, ‘Acracadabra’ at Tate Gallery, London, the 5th Biennale of Lyon, and recently in ‘The blind man…’ on view at, ICA London, MCA Detroit, De Appel, Amsterdam and Culturgest, Lisbon, amongst others. In 2012 Van Caeckenbergh had a retrospective at the new M Museum in Leuven.
