"Around 1994 Theo Baart and I decided to work together on a new project. Since our mutual interest was landscape as a metaphor for the rapid transition of the Netherlands we choose the Dutch Highway (Snelweg) as our subject. It took some time finding funding as nobody could imagine that this ugly grid of asphalt would be an interesting subject for a project. In 1996 the exhibition Snelweg>Highways in the Netherlands opened in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam and much to our surprise generated a lot of attention in the media. In order to publish the book Snelweg>Highways in the Netherlands (text by Tracy Metz; design by Typography & other serious matters) as we visualized it we had established our own publishing company Ideas on Paper. The book was very popular from the start and soon sold out. In 2006 Snelweg>Highways in the Netherlands was included in the groundbreaking Parr and Badger The Photobook: A History - Volume 2 and in 2012 it was included in The Dutch Photobook (Dutch NAi edition here / English Aperture edition here)."
