Brian Clarke
author · designer
Sir Brian Clarke was a prominent British painter, architectural artist, and designer, best known for his large-scale stained glass and mosaic projects. Born in Oldham to a working-class family, he became an art student at age 13 on scholarship. He rose to prominence in the late 1970s as a figure of the Punk movement and was recognized for his innovative 'architectonic' approach to stained glass, which often integrated modern materials like lead and ceramic frit glaze into contemporary architecture. His collaborations included work with major architects such as Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster. He also served as an executor for Francis Bacon's estate and curated several significant art exhibitions.[1]
