Cees Simoné Corneille Nieuwenhuijzen (1923–2010), widely known by his pseudonym Oscar van Alphen, was a Dutch photographer and writer renowned for his socially engaged documentary photography. He first achieved acclaim in 1958 with the publication of his first photobook, 'Kinderen in de grote stad,' which captured the realities of children in urban environments. Throughout his career, van Alphen focused on critical social and political issues, producing significant photo series on diverse subjects including the Red Army Faction, the employment bans in Germany, and the experiences of Palestinians. His style is marked by a high level of abstraction and a commitment to documenting contemporary history.
