Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (Nadar)
author · photographer
Born Gaspard-Félix Tournachon in Paris in 1820, he adopted the pseudonym 'Nadar' in the 1840s. A pioneering figure in the history of photography, Nadar was renowned for his innovative portraits of the nineteenth century's leading artists, writers, and performers, including Baudelaire and Degas. He was also a significant early advocate for aviation, notably in ballooning. His autobiographical writings, most notably 'Quand j'étais photographe' (translated as 'Toen ik fotograaf was'), provide a firsthand account of the development of photographic techniques and the cultural atmosphere of Parisian bohemian life.[1,2,3]
