Georgy (Yuri) Leonidovich Pyatakov (1890–1937) was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet economic administrator. Born in Horodyshche in the Kiev Governorate, he led the Provisional Workers' and Peasants' Government of Ukraine in 1918–1919. He later held senior economic posts, including deputy chairman of Gosplan and head of the State Bank of the USSR. In 1932 he became deputy People's Commissar of Heavy Industry under Sergo Ordzhonikidze. He supported Trotsky's Left Opposition and was expelled from the party in 1927, but recanted and rejoined in 1928. Booksellers' catalogue entries list him as editor (in chief) of the illustrated monthly magazine USSR in Construction (SSSR na stroike) in the early to mid 1930s, which is why he is credited as the 'author' of this 1934 set; the credit is editorial rather than literary. He was arrested in September 1936, convicted at the Second Moscow Show Trial and executed on 30 January 1937. He was posthumously rehabilitated in 1988.[1,2,3]
