He is best known as the founding editor-in-chief of the influential journal 'Wendingen' (1918–1931), where he championed innovative typography and architecture as a total work of art (gesamtkunstwerk). His versatile career spanned across various disciplines including urban planning, theater design (sets and costumes), furniture, and decorative arts. He was a pioneer of modernist and utopian ideas in Dutch architecture, often blending Expressionist influences with functionalism.
