Jan Tschichold

author · designer

Jan Tschichold (born Johannes Tzschichhold) was a German calligrapher, typographer, and book designer who became one of the most influential figures in 20th-century graphic design. He was a leading proponent of the 'New Typography' movement, which advocated for functionalism, asymmetry, and sans-serif typefaces inspired by Constructivism and the Bauhaus. In his later career, he shifted toward a more classical approach to typography, notably designing the visual identity for Penguin Books in the United States. His work bridged the gap between radical modernist experimentation and traditional craftsmanship.[1]
