Joop Beljon

author · designer

Johannes Jacobus (Joop) Beljon was a prominent Dutch artist, writer, and academic. Born in Schoten in 1922, he became an independent artist in Haarlem and later moved to The Hague, where he served as the director of the Royal Academy of Art from 1961 to 1985. Beljon's work is characterized by 'integrationism,' blending sculpture, fiber art, jewelry design, and environmental art with architecture. He was known for his large-scale public commissions in various countries, including works in the United States, Mexico, Bahrain, and Israel. During World War II, he served as a member of the Dutch resistance (onderduikers), forging travel documents to assist others. In 1998, he received the Wilhelmina-ring for his lifetime achievement in Dutch sculpture.[1,2,3,4,5]
