Jos Houweling

Jos Houweling is a Dutch visual artist, typographer, curator, and educator born in Amsterdam on May 28, 1943. He studied at the Amsterdamse Kunstnijverheidsschool and De Ateliers in Haarlem. His work is characterized by an interest in 'disruptive art' and the absurd elements of everyday reality. Houweling gained significant recognition for his series of photo books, most notably the '700 Centenboek' (1975), published to commemorate Amsterdam's 700th anniversary. The book features hundreds of photographs of mundane objects, street scenes, and urban details. He has held various leadership roles, including director of the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam (1998–2010) and served as a long-time lecturer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. His artistic practice spans diverse media including drawing, collage, animation, photography, typography, video, and digital art.[1,2]
