Joséphine Sacabo
photographer
Joséphine Sacabo is a photographer born in Laredo, Texas, in 1944. She was educated at Bard College in New York and lived and worked extensively in France and England before settling in New Orleans. Her early work followed the photo-journalistic traditions of Robert Frank, Josef Koudelka, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. In her current practice, she employs a subjective, introspective style heavily influenced by poetry, including works by Rilke, Baudelaire, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Her photography is characterized as dreamlike, surreal, and romantic, often serving as visual manifestations of written words. She has had over 40 gallery and museum exhibitions worldwide and her work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bibliothèque Nationale, and the George Eastman House.[1,2,3]
