Karel Appel

author

Christiaan Karel Appel (1921–2006) was a prominent Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet. He is best known as a founding member of the CoBrA movement, an international artistic group that emerged in the late 1940s. His work is characterized by spontaneous expression, vibrant colors, and a focus on primitive forms, often inspired by children's drawings and the works of mentally ill patients. Appel studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam during the 1940s and became a central figure in Dutch modern art, breaking traditional stylistic rules to pursue a free, gestural style.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7]
