Martín Chambi Jiménez

photographer

Martín Chambi Jiménez (1891–1973) was a pioneering Peruvian photographer who became one of the first Indigenous Latin American photographers to document his own people. Originally from Puno in southern Peru, he spent much of his career in Cuzco, where he captured the daily life, cultural heritage, and social structures of the Andean people. His work is noted for its dignity and preservation of indigenous visual discourse during a period of significant transition in Peru. He was instrumental in creating an archive that reveals the 'magic universe' of the Andes to a global audience.[1,2,3]
