Pieter Johannes de Booijs
photographer
Pieter Johannes de Booijs was a Dutch photographer and resistance fighter during World War II. He lived in Arnhem, where he operated a photography studio and shop starting in 1933. During the war, he was granted a 'secret' pass (Ausweis) to move freely through Arnhem, allowing him to document the German occupation, the looting of homes, and the evacuation of the city in the final year of the war. He captured approximately 300 photographs of these events on nine small-format film rolls. After the liberation, he continued to work as a photographer, notably capturing spontaneous images of children playing in the post-war environment and various commercial commissions. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 104.[1]
