Rebekka Engelhard was a Dutch documentary photographer who graduated cum laude from the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in The Hague in 1994. She interned at Het Parool in 1993 and also spent time studying in Prague and later studying anthropology in Amsterdam. Her subjects included people living in social isolation, deaf-blind children, prisoners and child labour. She was nominated for the PANL Kodak Award, a World Press Photo masterclass and the Silver Camera. Her graduation project on women's prisons in the Czech Republic grew into the photobook Ommuurde Dromen (1999), which documents women in prison in the Czech Republic, the United States, Russia, Great Britain, Senegal and the Netherlands. Her photographic work, almost 2,500 images, is held by the Maria Austria Instituut (MAI). The date of death (27 May 1999) comes from reference summaries that could not be checked against a fetched primary page. Reported birth dates differ (November 1968 or 1969), and the birthplace could not be verified.[1,2,3]
