Richard Tepe
photographer
Richard Tepe (1864–1952) was a pioneering Dutch nature photographer. He is recognized as one of the first photographers in the Netherlands to emphasize environmental protection and document wildlife systematically. Starting his work around 1900, he focused on birds, nests, plants, landscapes, and rural life. Tepe was particularly noted for his early documentation of bird species at Naardermeer (c. 1902–1905), which served as illustrations for nature publications. He remained loyal to his large-format camera with glass negatives throughout much of his career. His work is held in major collections including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and the Netherlands Fotomuseum.[1,2]
