Ruth Thorne-Thomsen

photographer

Ruth Thorne-Thomsen (1943–2025) was an American photographer known for her surreal and witty 'environmental collages.' Working primarily with a pinhole camera, she constructed dreamlike tableaux that evoked the romantic travel photography of the 19th century. Her work is characterized by its deliberate construction, using props, cutouts, and paper negatives to create visual fables rather than documentary records. She resided in Philadelphia for much of her career and was married to photographer Ray K. Metzker until his death in 2014.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]
