Published in 1982 as one of the earlier photobooks made in South Africa, 'In Boksburg' provides a dispassionate and detailed enquiry into the dynamics of a white, middle-class community during the apartheid era. Goldblatt, a critical observer of the racist dynamics of his native country, captured the seemingly uneventful flow of ordinary life in Boksburg between 1979 and 1980. The book includes seventy-one black and white photographs, a two-page introduction by Goldblatt, and a four-page reproduction of the 'Declaration of Group Areas at Boksburg' from 1982, which serves as a sobering legal record of racial separation.
