Pages from the Glossies

Facsimile reproductions of magazine pages show Helmut Newton's editorial fashion photography as it first appeared in print, from 1956 to 1998. The pages keep the original headlines, page numbers, captions and layouts of the magazines that ran them, among them Vogue, Elle, Queen and Stern. This lets the reader follow both the photographs and changing styles of magazine design across more than four decades. The material runs from Newton's early years as a young photographer to his later fashion work, and includes images that became widely known after their first publication in fashion editorials. Helmut and June Newton chose the pages from roughly 3,000 in the Newton archives, and the book reproduces more than 500 of them. The book concentrates on his editorial fashion work for magazines. It is a monograph by a single photographer, compiled from his own archive, and it is presented in English.
