Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography, vol 2.
Photographs of indigenous people used in 19th century colonial politics.
In the 19th century photography recorded the non-western cultures. In 1883 a colonial exhibition was organised in Amsterdam, devoted to indigenous peoples and their crops, produce and trades. In this fascinating book Laetitia Dujardin explains the backgrounds of this exhibition (and similar exhibitions in Belgium), the views on and attitudes towards non-western cultures and the role of photography in colonial politics.
The Manfred & Hanna Heiting Fund enables young researchers to study photography in the archives of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and publish their results in the series Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography.
