Factory Valleys: Ohio and Pennsylvania

Commissioned by the Akron Art Museum in 1979, Lee Friedlander traveled throughout the Ohio River Valley to document the industrial area. This volume presents a portrait of the contemporary American social landscape, combining formal brilliance with an acute perception of the factory world. The book includes 62 plates and an afterword by Leslie George Katz. It is noted for its clarity in capturing the industrial heartland, featuring images made from halftone negatives by Richard Benson and designed by Nicholas Callaway and Anne Kennedy. The work is considered one of Friedlander's finest, offering an insightful look at the workers and environments of the American industrial landscape.
