Helmut Gernsheim's Dutch-language study of Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) as a Victorian photographer.
A Dutch-language study of the photographs made by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known as the writer Lewis Carroll, in Victorian England. The text is by the photography historian Helmut Gernsheim. In 1947 Gernsheim found an album of Carroll's portraits in a junk shop. That find brought Carroll's long-forgotten photography hobby back to attention, and Gernsheim went on to publish on the subject, beginning with the English-language Lewis Carroll, Photographer (London, Max Parrish, 1949). This Dutch edition, published in Amsterdam in 1979, continues that line of work. It presents Carroll as a nineteenth-century amateur photographer, alongside the author's text on his photography.
