Thermometers, Heat, and Cold

Part of the Basic Science Education Series published by Row, Peterson and Company, this booklet is written by Bertha Morris Parker of the Laboratory Schools, University of Chicago, and checked for scientific accuracy by Clifford Holley, Instructor in Physical Science at the University of Chicago. Designated as "Intermediate" level by the publisher's Unitext imprint, the booklet uses colorful illustrations and photographs to explain temperature measurement and the behavior of heat and cold. The front cover features an illustration of a girl examining a large wall thermometer while holding an ice cream cone. Interior pages include a decorative full-page thermometer chart associating temperature ranges with seasonal outdoor activities (tropical beach, swimming, baseball, tennis, football, ice skating), as well as photographic spreads with sections such as "Keeping Them Hot or Cold" discussing heat conductors and insulators.
