Peter Sekaer (1901-1950) emerged as an artist in the company of Ben Shahn, Berenice Abbott, and Walker Evans. This book depicts his trajectory towards an original style, out from under their benign yet instructive shadows. Sekaer's early work combines dispassionate images with others that show his concern and intuitive grasp of the human condition. Eventually he found a style that was more socially engaged. His stance was more that of the artist/anthropologist, who delighted in recording the artifacts & gestures that defined a vital part of the 1930s .
Signs of Life is a photographic work by Peter Sekaer published by Gerhard Steidl Verlag. The book explores various aspects of existence through visual documentation. It serves as a collection of imagery that captures significant moments, textures, and environments reflecting the diversity of life.
