Photography Speaks: 150 Photographers on Their Art
Brooks Johnson
€16.50
Photographs by 150 photographers, from William Henry Fox Talbot to Cindy Sherman, each paired with the artist's own statement in an anthology about photography as art.
Each of the 150 entries pairs one example of a photographer's work with a biographical introduction and an original statement, taken from conversations with the artist or from writings, often written for this book. The photographers span the history of the medium, from William Henry Fox Talbot and Matthew Brady to Cindy Sherman, and include Eugène Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Lewis Hine, August Sander, Man Ray, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Gordon Parks and Rineke Dijkstra. The statements cover method, intentions and the state of the arts, and some are anecdotes, war stories or verse. The book is an anthology of photographers' own words rather than a monograph, with images drawn from the Chrysler Museum collection. This edition combines the earlier volumes Photography Speaks I and II and adds sixteen new selections, including Nadar, Roman Vishniac, Eikoh Hosoe, William Eggleston and Thomas Struth.
