Filmmaker Joris Ivens asked Robert Capa to go with him to China, where he and his cameraman John Fernhout planned to make a documentary about the Sino-Japanese War. Capa worked as a stills photographer and camera assistant, but also made many photo reportages on his own account which he published in well-known European and American magazines. This episode has only recently been highlighted in the literature on Capa. The main source had always been his estate, which is preserved in New York. It now turns out that Dutch museums and archives also have various small, partly unknown and unpublished series of photographs and albums recording that journey, including 30 photographs in the Rijksmuseum. They open a window onto film production and photojournalism in those days. And they still raise many questions. Which photographs are by Capa, and are there photographs of his that are not attributed to him? Who took the photographs in which Capa himself appears? Capa had plenty of opportunities to make press photographs alongside his work as assistant cameraman and stills photographer. How did he manage it? And is that really Capa on film? If so, these are the earliest known film clips of this famous photographer. The Manfred & Hanna Heiting Fund enables young researchers to study photography in the archives of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and publish their results in the series Rijksmuseum Studies in Photography.
