Robert Adams, who first visited these locations as a boy, returns to them in his fifties to record hushed walks and the changing seasons of the West. The book features 176 of Adams's beautiful black and white images, including views of the suburban West and rural crossroads. To accompany the photographs, Adams selected twelve poems by William Stafford, who similarly observed the practice of quiet in the outdoors. The work explores the balance of form and openness in the American landscape, affirming that many elements of nature remain protected despite the surrounding development.
