Abbas Kiarostami

author · photographer

Abbas Kiarostami (1940–2016) was a pioneering Iranian filmmaker, screenwriter, poet, and photographer. Born in Tehran, he graduated from the University of Fine Arts before beginning his career as a graphic designer and later establishing a film section at the Center for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. Kiarostami became an internationally acclaimed figure in world cinema, known for his minimalist, poetic style that explores the boundaries between reality and fiction. His work often features improvised performances, documentary textures, and real-life rhythms. Beyond his prolific output of over forty films—including masterpieces like 'Taste of Cherry' and the 'Koker' trilogy—he was also a significant photographer whose visual compositions were exhibited in various museums worldwide. He died in Paris in 2016 after undergoing medical treatment for cancer.[1,2,4,5]
