Abigail Heyman
author · photographer
Abigail Heyman (1942–2013) was a pioneering American feminist photojournalist and educator. She is best known for her landmark 1974 book 'Growing Up Female: A Personal Photo-Journal', which documented the restricted occupational roles of women in the United States through stark, clinical black-and-white photography. Her work explored themes of domesticity, fatigue, and social restriction, often shocking audiences with its honesty regarding subjects like abortion and labor. Heyman was one of the first women to join Magnum Photos and later served as a department director and teacher at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan during the 1980s and 1990s. Her photography has been featured in major publications including Harper's, The New York Times Magazine, Time, and Life.[1,2,3,4,5]
