Alain Desvergnes
author · photographer
Alain Desvergnes (1931–2020) was a prominent French photographer, educator, and critic. After studying journalism and sociology, he lived in North America in the 1960s, where he served as a lecturer at the University of Mississippi and a professor at the University of Ottawa. He returned to France in 1979 and served as the director of the École nationale supérieure de la photographie for sixteen years. Known for his exploration of the American South, particularly the mythical Yoknapatawpha County, Desvergnes captured the landscapes and culture of Mississippi (1963–1965) to create visual equivalents to the fictional worlds of William Faulkner.[1,2,3]
