Alejo Carpentier y Valmont (1904–1980) was a prominent Cuban novelist, essayist, and musicologist. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, to French and Russian parents, he moved to Havana as an infant and became a central figure in 20th-century Latin American literature. He is widely recognized for his influence on the 'Boom' period of Latin American literature and for being one of the first writers to practice magic realism (or 'lo real maravilloso'). His works often explore themes of colonialism, indigenous cultures, and the supernatural elements of the Caribbean landscape.[1,4]
