Lothar Baumgarten
author · photographer
Lothar Baumgarten (1944–2018) was a German conceptual artist known for his extensive work in photography, film, sculpture, and installation. His practice is deeply rooted in ethnography and anthropology, often exploring the collision of cultures, environmental issues, and the systems of representation surrounding indigenous populations. He studied at the Staatliche Akademie für bildende Künste in Karlsruhe and the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Baumgarten's work has been exhibited globally, including significant presence at documenta (5, 7, 9, and 10) and the Venice Biennale, where he won the Golden Lion in 1984. His artistic approach involves questioning the status quo through a diverse range of media, from ephemeral sculptures to site-specific interventions.[1,3]
