Alexander Alland, Sr.

Alexander Alland (1902–1989) was an American photographer, editor, and photo-historian. Born in Sebastopol, Crimea, he emigrated to the United States in 1923 after being held at Ellis Island. He became a significant figure in documenting immigrant life in New York City during the first half of the 20th century. Alland is particularly noted for his research into and preservation of Jacob A. Riis's lost negatives, which he eventually donated to the Museum of the City of New York.
