Anton Willem Nieuwenhuis (1864–1953) was a Dutch explorer, physician, and ethnologist who became renowned for his extensive expeditions in the interior of Borneo during the late 19th century. As a military doctor, he led several scientific missions to explore central Borneo, where he conducted pioneering multidisciplinary research including geographical mapping, biological collection, and detailed ethnographic documentation of the Dayak people. His work is considered among the most valuable historical records of the region's interior. Following his exploration career, Nieuwenhuis became an academic figure in the Netherlands, serving as a professor and rector at Leiden University.[1,2,4,5]
