Arnold Newman

photographer

Arnold Newman (1918–2006) was an American photographer widely recognized as a pioneer of environmental portraiture. Born in New York City and raised in Atlantic City and Miami Beach, he studied art at the University of Miami before beginning his photography career in 1938. He gained significant recognition in the early 1940s after being 'discovered' by Beaumont Newhall and Alfred Stieglitz. Newman is celebrated for his ability to capture subjects within their natural environments, creating a sense of place that defines his portraiture. Beyond portraits, he was also known for his abstract and documentary photography. He held various academic positions, including artist in residence at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton, and as an adjunct professor at Cooper Union.[1,2]
