Bas Jan Ader

author · photographer

Bastiaan Johan Christiaan 'Bas Jan' Ader (1942–1975) was a Dutch conceptual and performance artist known for his photography, film, video, and installation works. His practice often explored themes of physical and emotional vulnerability, mortality, and the limits of human action. He is famously remembered for his 1975 attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a small sailboat named 'Ocean Wave', from which he disappeared; his vessel was found drifting off the coast of Ireland nine months later. Ader's work frequently featured him as the sole performer, often engaging in repetitive or precarious actions that highlighted the tension between intention and chance.
