He is best known for developing 'epic theatre,' which departed from traditional theatrical illusion to create a social and ideological forum for leftist causes, utilizing techniques like the Verfremdungseffekt (distancing effect). Brecht's work often explored themes of Marxism, anti-fascism, and the mechanics of power. During his life, he lived in exile in various countries including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the United States before returning to East Berlin, where he worked with the Berliner Ensemble. His major works include 'The Threepenny Opera,' 'Mother Courage and Her Children,' and 'The Good Person of Sezuan.'
