Bill Brandt

photographer · author

Bill Brandt (born Hermann Wilhelm Brandt) was a prominent British photographer and photojournalist known for his high-contrast images of British society, distorted nudes, and landscapes. Born in Hamburg, Germany, he moved to London in 1931 and briefly worked in the studio of Man Ray in Paris. He became well-known for documenting contemporary life for magazines like Lilliput and Picture Post before shifting focus to more artistic, stylized photography. Despite his German birth, he disowned his heritage due to the rise of Nazism and identified as British.[1,2,4,5]
