Brian Rice

author · designer

Brian Rice is a British painter and printmaker born in Yeovil, Somerset. He began his artistic career in the early 1950s, studying at the Yeovil School of Art before completing national service as a tactical sketcher for the Royal Army Service Corps. His early work was characterized by abstract paintings featuring hard-edge geometries and contrasting colors. In the 1970s, he collaborated with Tony Evans on 'The English Sunrise' (1972), a book exploring sunrise motifs in British design. Following a period of disillusionment with color system paintings, Rice shifted his focus to photographic collages and later returned to painting in the 1980s, often drawing inspiration from archaeology and medieval art. He has been a lecturer at various institutions, including Brighton Polytechnic (now University), and is known for his extensive printmaking work and catalogue raisonnés.[1,2]
