photographer
Bruce Gilden is an acclaimed American street photographer known for his candid, close-up portraits of people in urban environments. Born in Brooklyn in 1946, he began his photographic career in 1967 after briefly considering acting. He is recognized for a distinctive style that utilizes on-camera flash to create high-contrast, emotionally engaged images. Gilden joined the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1998 and has published over 20 monographs of his work worldwide. His photography often captures the raw energy and theatricality of street life, particularly in New York City, but he has also documented diverse locations including Haiti, where he has traveled extensively since 1984.[1,2,3,4,5]
