Carl August Stachelscheid

photographer

Carl August Stachelscheid (1919–1990) was a German photographer and press photo reporter based in Düsseldorf. He began his career with commercial training before apprenticing under the photographer Martin Knauer. After Knauer's induction into military service in 1939, Stachelscheid took over the business, specializing in theater photography and later becoming a war correspondent for the Luftwaffe during World War II. Post-war, he worked as a press photo reporter for regional newspapers such as the Rheinische Post and the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa), while also establishing a successful advertising photography practice. He founded 'Film-Technik 16', a company providing film technology services that exists to this day. Stachelscheid is noted for his early adoption of color materials, notably producing the 1956 photo book 'Geboren im Feuer - Stahl'.[1,2]
