Catrien Ariëns (born December 8, 1944) is a Dutch documentary photographer and author known for her evocative social commentary and portraiture. Born in Vught, she initially qualified as a French interpreter before dedicating her life to photography in the late 1960s. Her work is characterized by a deep interest in people and social dynamics, particularly regarding the women's movement in the Netherlands during the 1970s and 80s. Since 1983, she has significantly focused on the cultural landscape and people of Curaçao, producing several photobooks on the island. Her 1992 photobook "In de beste tradities," which features black-and-white photographs of the Dutch upper class, was highly acclaimed and won the first Kees Scherer Prize for the best photobook in the Netherlands in 1991-1992. Her style balances intimate personal narratives with broader sociological observations.[2,3,4]
