Charles Robert Gatewood (1942–2016) was an American photographer, writer, and visual artist known for his extensive documentation of underground subcultures. Often described as an 'anthropologist of American counter-culture,' Gatewood captured raw and intimate images of fringe lifestyles, including the kink, BDSM, tattooing, body modification communities, bikers, and erotic performance artists. He began photographing in the 1960s and gained significant recognition with his 1975 book 'Sidetripping,' which featured text by William S. Burroughs. Gatewood lived and worked primarily in San Francisco, where he became a pioneering figure in documenting the American underground for nearly fifty years.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12]
