Charlotte Dumas

author · photographer

Charlotte Dumas is a Dutch contemporary photographer born in Vlaardingen in 1977. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2000 and furthered her education at the Rijksakademie from 2001 to 2002. Her artistic practice focuses on evocative formal portraits of animals, often exploring their utility, social function, or relationships with humans. Drawing inspiration from 17th-century Dutch Golden Age portraiture, she presents subjects as heroic figures engaged in struggles against marginalization or confinement. Dumas has lived and worked in both Amsterdam and New York City. She is represented by Julie Saul Gallery in New York and Galerie Paul Andriesse in Amsterdam.[1,2]
