Chauncey Hare

Chauncey Hare (1934–2019) was an American photographer known for his documentary work documenting the interiors of working-class homes and workplaces in the United States during the 1970s. Before becoming a fine-art photographer, Hare worked as a petroleum engineer for Standard Oil (later Chevron). He began photographing intermittently starting in the late 1960s, focusing on subjects that reflected his interest in social protest and the alienation of modern industrial life. His most notable works include 'Interior America' (1978) and 'This Was Corporate America' (1984), which were later expanded into the collection 'Protest Photographs' (2008). In 1985, Hare abandoned photography to become a licensed family therapist, eventually co-authoring clinical handbooks on work abuse. He donated his entire archive of photographs and negatives to the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2000.[3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15]
