Claude Cahun
photographer · illustrator
Claude Cahun (born Lucy Schwob) was a French surrealist photographer, sculptor, and writer who is celebrated for her pioneering exploration of androgyny and gender identity. Active in the 1930s and 1940s, Cahun utilized photography and sculpture to challenge societal norms, creating iconic self-portraits that portrayed her with an intentionally ambiguous gender presentation. Her work is deeply rooted in the Surrealist aesthetic, often utilizing photomontage and symbolic imagery to explore themes of the self and the subconscious. Beyond her artistic contributions, she was a participant in the French Resistance during World War II. Cahun collaborated with many significant artists, including André Breton and Marcel Moore, and her legacy continues to be influential in contemporary discussions of gender performativity and queer history.[1]
