Clemens Renaat Alice Jozef Schouwenaers
author
Clemens Renaat Alice Jozef Schouwenaars, known as Clem Schouwenaars, was a prominent Belgian writer of novels and poetry. Born in Mortsel in 1932, he grew up in a Catholic family but faced significant personal tragedy early in life, including the loss of several siblings. He studied humanities at various colleges in Antwerp before pursuing law studies in Brussels, which he eventually abandoned to pursue a literary career. Schouwenaars debuted with romantic poetry in 1955 and evolved toward a more reality-oriented lyricism that incorporated autobiographical elements. His work often explored themes of eroticism, social unrest, and the search for identity within the modern welfare state. He was known for his diverse output, including novels like 'Dokter Simon Falbeck' (1962) and 'De Seizoenen' (1972), as well as numerous poetry collections and translations. He received several awards during his career, including the Leo J. Krijn-prijs in 1962 and the Yang-prijs in 1973.[1,2]
