Danny Lyon is an influential American documentary photographer and filmmaker known for pioneering a style of photographic 'New Journalism.' This approach involved immersing himself deeply within his subjects' lives to capture intimate, participant-driven narratives. He first gained prominence in the 1960s as the chief photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), documenting the American Civil Rights Movement in the Deep South. Lyon is also recognized for his extensive documentation of subcultures and social outsiders, including outlaw motorcyclists and various urban scenes. His work often focuses on feelings and personal connection with his subjects rather than detached objectivity.
