Duane Michals (1932–2026) was a pioneering American photographer known for introducing narrative sequences, multiple exposures, and handwritten text into fine art photography. Moving to New York City in the mid-1950s after serving in the US Army, he began his career with a focus on staged photographic dramas that explored interior worlds, dreams, and metaphysical questions rather than literal reality. His work often draws on surrealist influences, featuring poetic or witty captions that interact with his images to create complex, sometimes contradictory narratives. Michals's practice expanded over decades to include painting, collage, sculpture, and film.
