Edward Joseph Ruscha IV (born December 16, 1937) is a prominent American artist associated with the Pop art movement. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Oklahoma City, he moved to Los Angeles in 1956 where he studied at the Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts). Ruscha's work is characterized by its exploration of language as a visual medium, often featuring fragmented words, typographic elements, and deadpan imagery of everyday American vernacular architecture, signage, and landscapes. He is well-known for his artist's books, paintings, drawings, and photography, which frequently reflect on contemporary life with candor and humor.
